Singapore Army Open House 2012

If you love technology, military vehicles and hands-on action, then you must head down to Army Open House 2012 (AOH2012) on the ‘Open to Public’ days this Saturday 26 May and Sunday 27 May 2012. The show is open from 9am to 8pm. There are a couple highlights where you get to relax and watch them show off – Dynamic Defense Demonstration at 10a-10:30a and 4p-4:30p, plus a special Military Show with pyrotechnics at 7p-7:45p.

The venue is the Singapore F1 Pit which does not offer a lot of shade so please make sure you bring a hat, lots of water and wear your sunblock. Be prepared to walk and climb in and out of vehicles so wear something appropriate. I do not recommend flip-flops unless you are just out to enjoy the company, atmosphere and sun.

This year marks the 45th Anniversary of Singapore National Service and there is a showcase, NS45, which will bring you through the journey and growth of the individuals and the organisation. Walk through the time tunnel to better understand how it has all change with a generation gap of father to son.

Take a stroll along Army Avenue to see how technological advances has come to make the 3rd Generation Army.

When you are ready to experience it in person you can go head-to-head with friends and neighbours in the Combat Zone. There you can try your hand at the SAR-21, an Anti-tank missile launcher and play the advance laser tag system. All the action makes you feel right there with the pops of the rounds going off when you pull the trigger. Take care not to pull until you are out of ammo when playing the laser tag.

If you are physically fit you can become an Adventure Soldier – climbing the wall or jumping off a platform simulating jumping out of a perfectly good airplane to parachute to the ground. Those tall enough and remember the flying fox ride at Sentosa will love the zip line.

Getting in the vehicles that are stationary is for wimps. Head on over to Terror on Tracks to ride in the real deal. I took a ride in the Light Strike Vehicle and it was fun to be in the open buggy. However, watch out for tree branches and keep your mouth closed, else you be eating some dirt or bugs as the vehicles plows through the bushes. (Watch out for some photos of my drive coming up at the end of day)

There are also some wet rides, not necessarily you getting wet, the vehicles are water vehicles. Check out the FCU and amphibious LARC V.

Thanks to the Organising Committee and MinDef PR for inviting me to an early preview.
