Parades and the celebrations surrounding Singapore’s NDP2010

PARADES are magical to young and old and from my experience living in other countries and watching parades I admire the enthusiasm andway that Singapore goes about organising and developing their parade. If you’ve lived in the USA or Canada you know that most parades take on the streets where police simply cordon off the roads with police barriers and then floats and performers stream through.

Anybody can watch those kind of parades – free and easy, you or your family basically stake out a place and defend the space until the parade time. Singapore could do the same by closing off specific roads and funneling the parade floats, performers and whatever else has been planned. Personally, I feel Singapore does a great job integrating all the participants into a performance while still maintaining the parade aspect. It is unfortunate that by doing performances as well as a parade route style of showmanship you limit the amount of live viewers. Yes, the National Stadium could be used but even then you could never get everyone into such a stadium. Singapore does a good job by balloting for actual day seating as well as rehearsals and practice sessions. In fact, I believe a fair amount of people get to experience and feel the passion even if it isn’t the actual day. If you are not the one being entertained you might be one of the entertainers.

There will be a lot of people involved in the making and here is a taste of the exciting entertainment.

So, not everyone will get to experience the NDP 2010 celebrations first hand at the Padang this year but the NDP committee working with the People’s Association (PA) Grassroots Organisations has organised and planned celebrations in five districts. This is great because I feel it will really bring the people together. Using some technology this will be further enhanced by a Two-Way telecast on Large LED screens. This will truly bring the people from all walks of life and all points of Singapore together for one celebration for the nation.

Take note that the location size and capacity is limited. In brackets beside each location is the approximate number of people each location can accommodate. Everyone is welcome and there will be no entry charges. A big bonus is there will be a limited quantity of Fun Totes available per constituency and the distribution will be done by coupons. The coupons will be given upon registration at nearby Community Clubs. Registration starts from 19 July 2010 on a first come first served basis. There are only 300 coupons per constituency.

To ensure you are entertained there will be well known artistes at each of the celebration districts and as mentioned above there will be a two-way telecast for the five celebration areas. If you like military hardware you’ll be happy to know there will be three mobile columns making snaking their way from the Padang to the Heartlands. Here’s the route and  a snapshot of what vehicles and personnel you can expect to see.

There will be other fringe activities supporting the build-up to National Day. This includes roadshows across Singapore. Here’s a look at the dates and places of roadshows. Some of the roadshows will encourage Singaporeans to contribute to breaking some records. This includes largest origami flag. Grassroots Leaders too the time to demonstrate at the media briefing.

If you miss out altogether on the celebrations but happen to own a smartphone like the Apple iPhone or an Android powered device you can access the NDP On-The-Go application to get a taste of the places and happenings.
